KTUH Alumni Show Sunday 16 November 2019, 3-6 PM

I had the great honor of being a guest DJ on KTUH's Alumni Show...exactly one year ago on Sunday 11/16/19, from 3-6 PM Hawaiian Standard Time. My intent was to post the playlist right after the show, but life got in the way and then got in the way some more, so here I am posting it one whole year after the fact. Better late than never, or something...?

Planning for this show was the most anticipated part of my first return to Hawaii since I left 5 years ago. It was a true pleasure to be able to send some songs out on the airways to Hawaii via radio and the world via ktuh.org!

Please support the artists that I have played on this show. Most of them can be found on Spotify, YouTube, or the streaming media of your choice. For your convenience I have made direct links to the artists available by clicking on their names below. I hope that you will consider purchasing music and/or merchandise directly from these artists to help support them in these difficult times during the COVID19 pandemic. These are some of my all-time favorite bands and maybe they'll become some of your favorites too. Their songs have changed my life for the better, and I truly hope that sharing them with you will be a transformative, positive experience. Download link here and at bottom of this post.

I love this music! I love KTUH! I love YOU!

Molto alohas, always!!!!

Definitions*

People are often really confused about the ideas of race and identity in Hawaii. Race and identity are complex issues and and of themselves, but in a place like Hawaii such issues become quite convoluted, especially for outsiders who may becoming from more ethnically homogenous locales. Even for someone such as myself who has dwelled in this archipelago for a number of years, questions of race and identity are often times still very daunting (even more so for those of us trying to figure out how we fit into this tiny melting pot in the Pacific).
I am often at a loss to explain the Hawaiian situation to outsiders. Many of them simply cannot seem to grasp the intricacies of how race and identity fit into a place like Hawaii, especially when they try to view Hawaii as merely another state in the United States, adapting the purview of privileged people living at the top of society in a land that was long ago colonized and had its original people scattered to the hinterlands where they may be forgotten so those whom inherited the land may live with a clear conscience. In truth I am over simplifying, but in fact Hawaii is not like any other state. Hawaii is/was a nation of people. What is now a state was once a free, sovereign kingdom that was creating a niche of power for itself in the Pacific when its rulers were illegally overthrown by a cabal of rich foreigners even before it was illegally annexed to the US by a rogue military officer's coup d'etat. I must digress, as I'm getting off topic.
A common occurrence frequently take place when people find out that my ex-wife was born and raised in Hawaii:

"Oh, is she Hawaiian?" they ask.
"No," I reply in short, deadpan brevity.
"But, she was born in Hawaii?"
"Yup."
"So, she is Hawaiian."
"Nope."
This is the point where I start getting blank stares from heads cocked with confusion.
"But people from Hawaii are Hawaiian," they start to stammer a bit with uncertainty.
"No," I reply, "HAWAIIANS are Hawaiian."
*Blank stares and lack of comprehension*
"Hawaiian is an ethnicity..." and this is where people's eyes start to gloss over, "...so people born in Hawaii aren't necessarily "Hawaiians" unless they're actually Hawaiian," and this is the point where they begin to drool à la Homer Simpson.
"...ok, so she's not Hawaiian. What is she?"
"Well, she's mostly X and Y."
"Are her parents from Hawaii?"
"No. They're from N and F mostly, but they've lived in Hawaii for almost 40 years."
"And you've lived there for about 7 years. Well, you guys are all locals anyway."
"Um no, "local" is also an ethnic designation in Hawaii..."
"Wha..." heads now begin to implode.
"Are Hawaiians local?"
"Sort of, but it's really complicated."
"Well, if someone is born in Hawaii they're Hawaiian."
"NO!" at this point I strangle the person or walk away shaking my head.

Understanding race and identity in Hawaii is complicated and confusing, but you can at least get a firm grasp on it if you really try. People like me are referred to as kama'aina. I don't know what the proper term for someone born in Hawaii who is not Hawaiian and no one has been able to give me a reasonable answer for that. However, those issues are vastly less important than understanding what a Hawaiian is. In Fall 2011 I took a class with Daviana McGregor called "The Hawaiians" at the University of Hawaii and I have reprinted the following technical definitions so that others may gain a slight bit of clarity.

HAWAIIAN -

NATIVE HAWAIIAN: In 1921, the U.S. Congress created the Hawaiian Homes Commission and defined the "native Hawaiians" who can apply for leases to the lands which it administers as: "Any descendant of not less than one-half part of the blood of the races inhabiting the Hawaiian islands previous to 1778." The Admissions Act defined the beneficiaries of the ceded public lands trust as "native Hawaiians as defined in the Hawaiian Homes Commission act, 1920." Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, Pub. L. No. 67-34, 42 stat. 108

HAWAIIAN: The Native American Programs Act, passed by Congress in 1974 defined Hawaiian as "Anyone, any of whose ancestors lived in the area known today as the Hawaiian Islands, prior to 1778." This is basically the definition used by Bishop Estate, Alu LIke, and Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center in defining their beneficiaries. The Naive American Programs Act of 1974, Pub. L. No. 93-644 § 801, 88 Stat. 2291

NATIVE HAWAIIAN: In November 1993, Public Law 103-150, The Apology Law, defined "Native Hawaiian" as "any individual who is a descendent of the aboriginal people who, prior to 1778, occupied and exercised sovereignty in the area that now constitutes the State of Hawai'i." Pub. L. No. 103-150, 107 Stat. 1510.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES -

The Unites Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples adopted September 7, 2007, recognizes the rights of all indigenous peoples, including native Hawaiians. The United Nations considered for adoption the Draft Declaration of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Population at its Eleventh Session in 1993. The Cobo Report, "Study of the Problem of Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations," was completed for the United Nations in 1987, after an eleven year study of indigenous populations in 37 different countries throughout the world. It stated the following definition of indigenous populations:

Indigenous communities, peoples, and nations are those which, having a historical continuity with preinvasion and pre-colonial societies that developed on their territories, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of the societies now prevailing in those territories, or parts of them. Thy form at present non-dominant sectors of society and are determined to preserve, develop, and transmit to future generations their ancestral territories, and their ethnic identity, as the basis of their continued existence as peoples, in accordance with their own cultural patterns, social institutions, and legal systems.

NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLES -

The U.S. Congress has recognized the sovereignty of over 550 American Indian, Eskimo, and Aleut nations, tribes, and peoples up to 1999. There are more than 2 million Native Americans and Alaska Natives, 20 percent of whom live on 314 reservations. Native Hawaiins are not yet formally recognized as a sovereign nation.

Jet Set

On this Earth, everything comes to an end in due time.
We try not to mourn too much at the passing of an epoch,
but each era closes in bittersweet sorrow none the less.
We here in Honolulu bear witness this evening to the passing
of an era.
In the past decade there haven't been more things that have
kept me going than KTUH Honolulu. In times good and bad, Ktuh Honolulu has been a
constant source of motivation and inspiration, and it has provided
my inner warrior with a much needed soundtrack to fight forward and
keep marching steadily forward.
In all that time, Dj mr.nick has been a mainstay on the Honolulu
airwaves. His show, the Jet Set, brought me a lot of much needed joy
and comfort. For years I was excited just at the opportunity to be able
to tune in to his show, but then when it finally became time for me to
become a part of the KTUH ohana, I was privileged to have been trained
by him. Now, after all this time, Nick's time to pass the torch along has
finally come.
Tonight is truly the end of an era, but instead of wallowing with a saddened
heart I strengthen my resolve. We're all extremely fortunate to have had Nick Yee
share time and music with us. Now that the Jet Set has come to a close on KTUH we
can only be thankful for what he's shared with us and in his wake we wait for the
greatness that the next generation of his successors with bring to enrich both the
community and the world at large.
Aloha nui loa and many mahalos, Mr. Nick!
Viva KTUH!!!

City Looks for plan for Haiku Stairs

City Looks for plan for Haiku Stairs
by Gordon Y.K. Pang
Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Members of the City Council and Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s administration promised to try again to come up with a plan for the Haiku Stairs that would appease both hikers and Kaneohe residents who say they’re tired of unruly visitors and other trespassers.

Members of the Friends of Haiku Stairs want the city to reopen access roads to the hiking trail and to institute a management program there similar to Haunauma Bay Nature Preserve.

But at a Council Parks Committee meeting Monday, the area’s state lawmakers, fire and police representatives and a resident said it’s time that access to Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, be cut off permanently by removing the bottom rungs of the trail.

At the end of the meeting, Council Parks Chairman Joey Manahan said he will establish a working group or task force “to look at possible solutions.”

Windward Councilman Ikaika Anderson said he views Caldwell’s position critical to a possible opening.

Caldwell issued a release later Monday saying the illegal trespassing problems raised by Haiku residents must be resolved before he will support reopening the stairs.

“The Haiku Stairs is a unique attraction and I would like to find a solution or partnership that might allow the city to reopen them, but that will only happen if the access issue is resolved to the neighborhood’s satisfaction.”

The stairs were part of the Coat Guard’s Omega transmission station at the bottom of Haiku Valley and were built by the Navy in 1943 to reach the cable facilities above the valley. Wooden stairs were replaced with galvanized metal ones in 1955.

The city, under the leadership of former Mayor Jeremy Harris and then Windward Councilman Steve Holmes, took ownership of the stairs from the military in the early 2000s and the city spent $875,000 to repair them. But jurisdictional entanglements ensued as opposition from residents mounted and the attraction never reopened.

State Re. Ken Ito, (D, Kaneohe-Maunawili-Kailua) said he does not believe the trail should be reopened, at least not until neighborhood concerns are addressed.

Ito said the state Department of Transportation and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, which both own property the public will need to access the city-owned stairs, have indicated a reluctance to make their sections public.

Ito said he has tried for more than 10 years to resolve the issues involving the stairs.

Caroline Sluyter, DOT spokeswoman, told the Star-Advertiser that a DOT-maintained road used during construction of the H-3 freeway is not paved and was never intended to be a public road.

Fire Department Capt. Dale Mosher said fire officials hold that not only should the trail be closed, but that the city should remove the stairs on the lower portion to shut them down permanently.

“We think it’s risky to the public,” Mosher said. “We think it’s risky to ourselves and we would like it shut down.”

A string of Friends of Haiku Stairs supporters and hiking enthusiasts urged Council members to at least listen to arguments for reopening the trail, which they view as a valuable environmental and cultural resource.

Many said they believe a majority of the concerns raised by the residents stem from the tendency of hikers to try to reach the stairs in the middle of the night to avoid being stopped by security guards stationed at the base of the trail during the day. Vernon Ansell, Friends of Haiku Stairs president, said there are four access roads that can be reopened that would allow hikers to reach the stairs during daylight hours without disturbing neighbors.

Like other supporters, Ansell said the trail is a unique treasure that should be valued and preserved. His group holds tree to four work days a year along the trail, clearing it and removing alien species. “It’s just amazing what’s up there and can be made available to the general public,” he said.

Supporters of reopening the trail also dismissed conchs that it is unsafe, noting that the death of a man on the stairs two years ago was the result of a heart attack.

I subbed in for Michael Bernsten this morning. The show started out strong with powerful post rock and then moved into some indie rock. I was going to go onto some heavy noise with new stuff by Ty Segall and Sonic Youth, but I accidentally went on an electro tangent so I just rolled with it for the rest of the show.

KTUH Staff Meeting December 5, 2012

Yeah, so I'm back from Arizona. I was gone almost 4 months! My first day back kicked off after a mere 3-4 hours of sleep followed by an orientation meeting for the University of Hawaii Honors Program and ended with a KTUH staff meeting at 6 PM. A Hawaiian Chant

Chant:

Noha ana ke akua
I ka nahelehele
I'alai'ia e ke ki'ohu'ohu
e ka ua koko
O na kino malu i ka lani malu e hoe
E ho'olu mai ana o Laka
E kona kahu
O makou noa
The deity dwells
in the wilderness
hidden away by the mist
and the low-lying (red) rainbow
The entities who offer protection in the sacred heavens
Increase the presence of Laka
and her protectors
We are free

KTUH Playlist for 08/07/2012, 9 PM-12 AM

Tonight was my second to last show. Shoots! Time really flies, yo. Tonight's show was kind of a mishmash of musical amalgamations, but I think it worked well for the most part.

Next week is the last episode of Post Nothing before I head out to Arizona to hang out in the high desert and spirit quest so you're gonna wanna tune in and turn it up cause it's gonna be a smorgasbord of win. Tune in Tuesday, August 14, 2012, from 9-Midnight HST (GMT +10) to see what I play. Post Nothing airs on KTUH Honolulu, 90.3 FM and live streams on www.ktuh.org.

KTUH Playlist for 07/31/2012, 9 PM-12 AM

Welcome to August. Summer is almost over. What's up with that?
UH Manoa is pretty much the noisiest campus I have ever been on. Construction, construction everywhere and not a quiet place to think.
In other news, I shed blood for KTUH yesterday. I mean that literally. Yesterday we were cleaning out the live room for pre-rennovation and and I really got beat up moving stuff around... omfg.

My show, Post Nothing, will be back on the air next Tuesday from 9PM-Midnight, only on KTUH Honolulu, 90.3 FM ktuh.org live stream 24/7. Meh.

The show was kind of all over the place tonight. I hope that was a good thing. Meh.
I don't know at what point the 11 PM hour started as I forgot to note it. Meh.
I played a lot of weird old Japanese 45s as background music when speaking on the air this evening; you can all thank the Chef for dragging that box out. Meh.
I got rained on a lot today. Meh.
Time to go home and sleep. Meh.

KTUH Playlist for 07/10/2012, 9 PM-12 AM

Well, fuck a duck- another one bites the dust!
Tonight's show was great, in my not so humble opinion. I played a lot of great new stuff and somehow managed to maintain a pretty cohesive sound regardless of the switch-ups of musical stylings. I played one metric ton of new stuff, but then right before the 11:00 PM hour I got way old school.
Post Nothing will be back next week, same Post Nothing time, same Post Nothing channel- 90.3 FM, KTUH Honolulu (http://ktuh.org live stream 24/7).

KTUH 90.3 FM Playlist for 06/03/12, 9 PM - 12 AM

Independence day? Bah, humbug!
Well, this weeks show started out hot and heavy on the noise and then shifted toward metal and eventually ran into the realm of punk. Why? Why not? I played a lot of anti-government, anti-war stuff which was a nice detour from what I usually play.
